Tahoe Community college,founded in 1976, the school is a non-profit, tax-exempt institution governed by an independent Board of Trustees.

With facilities on the fifty-acre Texas Avenue campus in the Inkswell section of Southeast Washington includes The Toni Morrison Building Center for Arts and Literature, The George Washington Carver Science Center, The Angela Y. Davis Library, The Gomes Interfaith Center and the Alice Walker Building (administration); Campus Services (security, information technology, and buildings and grounds; Athea Gibson and Marion Jones Gymnasiums; four athletic fields including one with all-weather turf surfaces. and twenty indoor tennis courts and a twelve-lane track.

The fifteen-acre Cannery Row Campus in Northeast Washington includes Hurston House(administration and Malcolm X Library); the Parks Building (classrooms and conference rooms); the Coltrane Music Building; the Northeast Meeting and Coffee House, athletic field, and the Anthony Irvin Aquatic Center.

For the 2008-2009 school year, 25,659 students are enrolled.
